Match Report: Tottenham 1 – 1 Liverpool

Liverpool’s last away game of their opening fixtures came in the form of Tottenham, who have managed to rack up 4 points in their opening two matches.

Liverpool left much to the imagination in their last EPL match against Burnley, but in the week spread their attacking wings to put 5 passed a helpless Burton in the EFL.

Liverpool starting XI: Mignolet, Clyne, Lovren, Matip, Milner, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Lallana, Coutinho, Mane, Firmino.

Liverpool subs: Manninger, Moreno, Lucas, Stewart, Grujic, Sturridge, Origi.

Tottenham starting XI: Vorm, Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose, Dier, Wanyama, Eriksen, Alli, Lamela, Kane

Tottenham subs: McGee, Carter-Vickers, Davies, Onomah, Winks, Janssen, Son

A scrappy start ended up leading to an incredible chance for Coutinho, unsurprisingly a play started by Mane. But unfortunately the ball wasn’t hit with enough pace and Vorm’s outstretched foot managed to keep the score line at zero’s.

Just a minute later Mignolet does his bit to keep Liverpool in the game with an excellent punching save. Not his usual style but we’ll take the positive improvement!

Liverpool without a doubt had the better chances of the half though. Things started to look to get a bit scrappy with both Danny Rose and Sadio Mane going in the books in quick succession for late challenges.

A breakthrough for Liverpool in the 42 minute when Firmino does his best Suarez impression and attempts to run passed every defender. Lamela was left in the wind and didn’t have a choice but to clip Firmino’s heels and bring him down. Penalty. Milner. Goal.

43 minute: Tottenham 0 – 1 Liverpool

Right before half time Spurs got an obscure free kick in their own half and in an attempt to foil them taking it quickly, Coutinho jumped in the way. Foolish yellow; never do this to your team, ever.

Half Time: Tottenham 0 – 1 Liverpool

Actually when you look at the stats at half time they’re pretty even except for one difference; Liverpool’s shots from inside the box. Again they are going for the setup poaching goal, except this time there’s no Sturridge to poach.

Spurs start the second half out for blood but are quickly silenced by a Liverpool goal….that won’t count because the linesman forgot his glasses today. Well onside, wrongly called offside. This would’ve killed off the game for sure.

Building from their luck, Spurs continued to press and finally found their breakthrough in the 72 minute. It was really clumsy from both Milner at left back letting the ball come in, and Clyne on right back being out of position. Mane was actually doing a better attempt at trying to defend but you can’t blame him.

72 minute: Tottenham 1 – 1 Liverpool

Sturridge not on until the 88 minute, a bit of a surprise and one that should probably be explained sooner rather than later because Sturridge looked a very unhappy boy on the bench.

No opportunity for him to make an impact at this point really.

Full Time: Tottenham 1 – 1 Liverpool

Comments after the match that this game felt like 2 points lost rather than 1 gained; would have to agree. We had this game and let Spurs back into it.

Next match is our first home game against champions Leicester City. This game needs to see Mane and Sturridge start. I’m confident that if Liverpool get as many balls into the box that they did in this game, Sturridge will put a few in.

Another note, Wijnaldum practically invisible at times. Not sure what his strengths are yet but they need to show soon.

Roll on September!

    1. I wish I could go to the games but unfortunately don’t live in England. I have been to Anfield before and have been to other stadiums when visiting but not a regular thing. Will definitely leave you some feedback 🙂 thanks so much!
